<p>On 15 March, Londonderry’s Nerve Centre will pay host to the premiere of Buy Rights – Have Your Say – a DVD produced for the Consumer Council by the Nerve Centre. Starring local actors, the DVD and supporting materials have been developed to help young people across Northern Ireland know their consumer rights and express them confidently.</p>

Consumer Council research shows that just over half of consumers feel informed about their rights. With this in mind, ahead of 15 March which marks ‘World Consumer Rights Day’, the Consumer Council says it is important for consumers to know their rights so they can take action to get redress when things go wrong with goods or services they have purchased.

The Consumer Council launched its new education resource ‘Understanding Payday Loans’ as part of World Consumer Rights Day today at Springvale Learning Centre. This comes against a backdrop of a 42 per cent increase in high interest lending since 2007 . ‘Understanding Payday Loans’ is the first consumer education resource in the UK that will help consumers get to grips with how payday loans operate and the costs associated with this type of borrowing. The lesson plans are primarily designed for adult education tutors and advice staff who are working with consumers in the community and voluntary sectors.
