CONSUMER COUNCIL SLAMS INCREASE IN BUS AND RAIL FARES

Responding to Translink’s announcement on fare increases Joan Whiteside, Chairman of the General Consumer Council said:

“We in the Consumer Council called for a freeze in fares until standards improved. We welcome the fact that Translink has listened and frozen some fares. However, an average increase of 4%, and particularly the 11% hike for the Citybus 4 journey ticket, is bad news for many travellers.” “This appears to be a desperate measure to meet economic targets and will further erode numbers. The Consumer Council wants to see more people using public transport - higher fares and falling standards do not encourage this” “The Government must provide more financial support so that people in Northern Ireland are persuaded to make greater use of public transport. ” ENDS Notes for Editors 1.
