A Consumer Council research report issued today - Consumer 2010 – reveals unique insights into the attitudes and behaviours of Northern Ireland (NI)consumers in the face of looming public spending cuts. The research study,undertaken by Ipsos MORI for the Consumer Council, details what the key priorities are for consumers in difficult economic times.

Responding to the results of Translink’s Charter Monitoring survey(I) for Spring 2010, Ryan Simpson, Senior Consumer Affairs Officer at the Consumer Council says: “It’s a welcoming sign that current passengers have a high level of satisfaction with services, yet Translink need to do more to entice people to use public transport. Whilst value for money ratings have increased for Ulsterbus and NI Railways, value for money ratings are slightly down for Metro. However, the Consumer Council is concerned to see passenger journeys fell by 2.5m across all three Translink companies in a year.(II)”
As from today, Northern Ireland motorists will see an increase in the price of petrol and diesel due to a one pence per litre (ppl) rise in fuel duty – the second such rise this year. Amid the worst recession for thirty years, this is yet more worrying news for consumers and will add to increasing car fuel bills across Northern Ireland.
