Petrol and diesel prices continuing to soar and the centralisation of many public services such as health care and education mean rural consumers have to travel further at more expense. Ryan Simpson, Interim Head of Transport outlines the Consumer Council’s views on the need to improve rural transport services.
Responding to the news that rate arrears in Northern Ireland have soared to record levels of more than £157million, the Consumer Council’s Head of Money Affairs, Julie McCurley said:
Air strikes, ash cloud, bad weather and tour operators going out of business have wreaked havoc for Northern Ireland travellers over the last six months. The Consumer Council today is urging holidaymakers to make sure their holiday is protected by publishing a fact sheet with all you need to know about protecting your holiday flights and accommodation.
With consumers across Northern Ireland affected by flash flooding on Wednesday 21 July – giving rise to concerns that more could be on the way – the Consumer Council has issued advice for homes and businesses.

Goldtrail Travel Limited, which offered flights and package holidays to Turkey from Belfast International Airport ceased trading on Friday 16 July 2010. There will be no further outbound flights.
This is having a considerable impact on passengers due to the time of year and popularity of Turkey as a destination for Northern Ireland holidaymakers. Approximately 1000 passengers are affected locally, including those already in Turkey and those due to fly over the coming days.
The Consumer Council is encouraging passengers who wish to avoid the £1 drop off/pick up fee at Belfast International Airport (BIA) to take advantage of the free 10 minute grace period in the long stay car park. At a meeting today (6 July) BIA confirmed that this provision had been in place for some time but was never promoted to passengers.
