Aodhan O’Donnell, Head of Transport at the Consumer Council said, “The collapse of the railway bridge near Malahide is an extraordinary situation and we are thankful that there were no injuries or deaths as a result. However, there is no doubt that it will cause severe disruption for passengers and commuters who rely on the Enterprise service to travel to and from Dublin.
Loretta O’Hara, Head of Consumer Support at the Consumer Council said:
“The Consumer Council has been in contact with Mr McCarter regarding the £67,000 quotation he received from NIE for a new electricity supply to his home. Mr McCarter is a 74-year-old pensioner who survives on a weekly pension of £100 so the reality is he cannot pay this bill. The Consumer Council has the legal power to represent electricity consumers here and we will be investigating this issue on behalf of Mr McCarter.
Kathy Graham, Head of Water at the Consumer Council said, “The Consumer Council is aware that households in the Hilltown area were cut off from their water supply last week. Any interruption to water supply has a big impact on people’s daily lives and we understand the frustrations of those who were affected.
Consumer Council research finds air passengers can pay between £33 and £57 more than advertised fare.
The Consumer Council has welcomed a commitment from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to conduct a market study on the way goods and services are advertised and priced. The move follows the Consumer Council’s submission of an in depth report to the OFT on the impact of additional charges for consumers.
The Consumer Council is today encouraging consumers to find out if some of the millions of pounds still sitting in forgotten bank accounts in Northern Ireland belongs to them. The comments come following the launch of a consultation on how any remaining money that is not claimed should be spent.

The Consumer Council is today launching ‘Safer Ways to Pay’, a guide to help consumers keep their money, paid out in deposits and pre-payments, safe in the event of a business going bust. The guide aims to provide consumers with the information they need to shop with confidence and ensure they are protecting their hard earned cash when buying big items such as furniture or saving money with savings clubs.
