New research published today by The Consumer Council and The Utility Regulator revealed that consumers here are unaware of schemes available from energy companies to help them manage their bills.
The Consumer Council today welcomed the move by Phoenix Supply Limited (PSL) and NIE Energy (NIEE) to quickly pass on reductions to their customers as a result of falling wholesale energy costs. These reductions are needed for consumers who are struggling to pay an extra £27 a week to heat and light their homes, put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads compared to this time last year.
Many car owners find garages intimidating and worry that mechanics might take advantage of their lack of knowledge – and that is particularly the case for female car owners. These are just some of the findings revealed in “What’s the Damage?” – a new research report from the Consumer Council into consumers’ views of the car repair and servicing industry. The research is accompanied by a handy consumer guide to help motorists choose a good garage. It is full of advice about what to ask the garage before you leave your car in for a service and what to do if something goes wrong.

The Consumer Council today gave evidence to the Committee for Finance and Personnel to discuss what local banks can do to help consumers and the economy as the credit crunch continues. They also took the opportunity to record their concern at the local banks and the British Bankers Association not making themselves available to meet with the Committee.

The Consumer Council today said that consumers are paying too much for their electricity and that the underlying regulatory system that leaves households here paying £114 more than those in GB needs to be changed to work better for consumers.
The Consumer Council today launched its 2008 Christmas card entitled - ‘Take hold of the reins this Christmas’ - with twelve money saving tips to help consumers take control of their festive spending. The card is the latest edition to the Consumer Council’s Smart Shopper series designed to give consumers the information and skills they need to make their money go further.
