The Consumer Council said today that the Phoenix natural gas price hike of 28 per cent could put many low income households in crisis at a time when the cost of living is increasing, and could rise further. It called for the Government to consider what further action can be taken to support people struggling to make ends meet, and to redouble its efforts to make sure everyone is claiming all the benefits they are entitled to.

The Consumer Council says that consumers here are a major step closer to a fair deal in the controversial High Court battle over excessive bank charges. The judge’s announcement, which means that banks must prove their charges are fair once and for all, is a victory for customers.

They called on Minister Conor Murphy to continue to keep the focus on getting water right for consumers so that they have a guarantee that any future water bills will be fair and affordable.
