The Consumer Council today gave its full support to the Independent Water
Review Panel’s first report saying it is the best, most practical starting point for getting the right deal for all consumers, particularly those on low incomes. The report confirms that consumers do already pay for water and recommends that they should not pay any more until April 2009 when the proposed average household bill would be two thirds less than expected at around £120, instead of £334.

Eleanor Gill, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council, has been crowned public sector personality of the year at a glittering awards presentation last night (4 October). The prestigious event honoured the cream of Northern Ireland business personalities and organisations.
The Consumer Council said today that the 3.9 per cent increase in electricity prices is unwelcome but reasonable. However, it described the huge 14 per cent increase in Economy 7 night time prices as a body blow to the 45,000 households who will have to cough up an extra £50 a year. The Consumer Council has called for real action to help these households, a third of which may already be in fuel poverty and stuck with Economy 7.
