The start of 2011 will be bleak for Northern Ireland motorists as the impact of added fuel duty tax and rising VAT affects the price of fuel . These increases could see motorists paying 125ppl for petrol and 129ppl for diesel. The warning was issued today (22 December 2010) by the Consumer Council as it publishes its latest ‘Review of Petrol and Diesel Prices’. The report shows that we are now paying £6.89 more for petrol and £8.08 for diesel compared to the same time last year.

The stark reality that poorer people pay more for everyday essentials will be
highlighted today at a Consumer Council led event. Around 50 organisations from
the private and public sectors will meet at Clifton House – the Poor House - to
agree key actions and changes that will make a difference to the everyday lives of
people on low incomes.
This event aims to illustrate how people who are less well off tend to pay more for
some necessities and are often unable to access the best deal.
