Family Fun Day

The Consumer Council will be holding an event in Steelstown GAA Club Hall on Thursday 15 December to help people manage their money in the run up to Christmas. The family day will be full of fun activities to keep the children entertained as well as quizzes designed to help people think about the way they spend money.

Joleen Cunningham at the Consumer Council said: “With Christmas just around the corner and many families having to tighten their belts this year, it has never been a more important time to help families manage their money. This event will be a great opportunity for families to come along and get some information on how to make their money work best for them.”

The event is part of a ‘Financial Capability and Affordable Credit’ pilot which has been developed by the Consumer Council, with the support of Ulster Bank and the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland.

Pauline McKiernan from Ulster Bank said: “We are delighted to support this event as part of our wider involvement in financial education through the MoneySense Programme. Moneysense is a free financial education programme which Ulster Bank has developed to help people make informed decisions about their money and understand how financial products and services work. It’s all about helping people understand and manage their money better. At the event, we’ll be running fun interactive sessions for young people to really bring the topic to life.”

Members of the local steering group helping to shape and deliver the project include Apex Housing, Greater Shantallow Area Partnership, Derry Credit Union and the Housing Rights Service.

Teresa McCloskey, from APEX Housing said: “With changes in the Welfare benefits system looming and with an increasing number of people borrowing money from very high interest lenders, it is important that people maximise the income that they have.’

The family fun day will be running from 1pm to 5pm on Thursday 15 December and is open to all families in the area to come along and learn how to manage their money as well as having a bit of fun in the lead up to Christmas.
