We adopt Menopause Standard to support workforce
We are marking World Menopause Day (18 October), by adopting the BSI’s BS 30416 menstruation, menstrual health and menopause in the workplace standard (menopause standard).
The menopause standard addresses taboos around the subjects of menstruation, menstrual health and menopause.
It suggests straightforward actions and adjustments that organisations can implement alongside existing wellbeing initiatives, education and awareness.
We will be introducing Menopause Champions who will act as advocates for staff members experiencing symptoms or seeking support. It will also be implementing a training programme enabling line managers to understand the challenges staff may face and providing them with the right tools to deliver effective support and guidance.
Noyona Chundur, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council said that adopting BS 30416 is important to the ethos of the Consumer Council.
“We are adopting the standard as part of our continuing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion,” she said.
“Its core aim is to acknowledge the diverse experience within teams and facilitate fair treatments and opportunities. This includes supporting those experiencing menstruation, menstrual health or menopause symptoms and ultimately empowering them through every life stage. Using the Standard, we can now future proof the organisation and ensure it continues to fulfil this requirement.” she added.
The emphasis of the standard is on education and awareness. It has been developed to consider changes in working life, recognising that traditional core working practices used by previous generations no longer provide the support needed to enable staff to perform effectively in their roles.
Anne Hayes, Director of Sectors and Standards Development at BSI comments: “There are many factors that can lock women out of the workforce – but there are also clear strategies to address this, from support for those experiencing menopause to steps in other areas such as working flexibly and breaking down stigma that could contribute to an enhanced work environment for all. I’m delighted that BSI’s guidance has helped the Consumer Council take the first crucial steps to supporting talented people throughout their working lives, helping to accelerate progress towards a more diverse, equitable and productive working future.”
