CHAMPION WEBSITE IS BIG HIT WITH CONSUMERS

<p>Northern Ireland’s first ever consumer website was today celebrating being named as the best public information site in the UK.</p>

Embargoed until 10.00am Wednesday 14 February 2001 CHAMPION WEBSITE IS BIG HIT WITH CONSUMERS Northern Ireland’s first ever consumer website was today celebrating being named as the best public information site in the UK. Consumerline – the General Consumer Council’s advice website - was named as the Public Information Website of the Year in the IVCA Biz-Net Awards. The Council beat off competition from other top websites including: BBC Gardening The Tate Gallery Royal National Lifeboats Association Up My Street The winning site, www.consumerline.org , offers free information to help people tackle typical consumer problems and points them in the right direction if they need expert help. “Consumerline helps people avoid rip-offs by giving them vital information quickly in a way that is easy to understand, ” said Joan Whiteside, Chairman of the Council. “We are delighted to have an award winning site attracting 24,000 visitors every month. It’s definitely a big hit with consumers.” Ray Douglas, Managing Director of The Internet Business Ltd, the local company who designed Consumerline said, “We worked closely with the Consumer Council to research the specific needs of their users. Our aim was to design a site which is easy to access and simple to use. With 27% of young adults using the Internet Consumerline gives the public expert help at their fingertips 24 hours a day. Its popularity, not only with the judges but also with users is extremely gratifying.” Notes to Editors 1 The celebration takes place at The Edge in Belfast on 14 February at 10.00am.
