My water bills were inaccurate

A consumer had purchased land and was using it for commercial purposes, however, the meter serving the land was also serving a domestic dwelling. Therefore, the water bills issued were not truly reflective of the water being used for commercial purposes. The consumer was unable to obtain the necessary consent for getting a separation of supply, which would allow his commercial land to be billed separately. 


We contacted Northern Ireland Water (NI Water) on the consumer's behalf to investigate what options were available. The consumer suggested fitting a separate meter on his land which would only record the commercial usage. NI Water agreed with this proposal and a meter was fitted on his land.


NI Water took regular readings from his meter to calculate his average daily consumption and used this figure to re-calculate his previous bills. As a result, the consumer received a refund of over £300.
