The Consumer Council and the Department for Finance and Personnel are hosting an event to hear people’s views on NIDirect - a new way to contact Government.

People should be able to use one single number to contact any public service according to research carried out by the Consumer Council. Getting through to Government departments can be a major headache for people and the Consumer Council is working in partnership with the Department for Finance and Personnel (DFP) to deliver the “NIDirect” vision – a new way to contact government services with just one simple number. Key representatives from organisations right across Northern Ireland are taking part in a major consultation exercise culminating in a stakeholder event at the Stormont Hotel today.
The Consumer Council today welcomed HSBC’s significant announcement that all 10,000 of its Northern Ireland customers will now be warned if the withdrawal they are about to make at the cash machine will send them into the red. The Consumer Council called on all banks operating here to follow suit.

The Consumer Council believes that the Government's investment in buses and trains is reaping results for passengers. The statement comes as independent research shows an increase in performance on all Translink services. The Consumer Council has persistently demanded that Translink focus on getting people from A to B on time, every time and are welcoming the news that at last they are beginning to perform to the standard passengers expect. The Government and passengers need to see a return on the significant investment made to date and that requires sustained performance by Translink.
Some 110,000 children will enjoy a safer bus journey to school this year as the rule that allowed three people to sit on a seat designed for two is scrapped.
