11 September 2008“The Consumer Council welcomed today’s statement from First Minister, Peter Robinson that the timing and phasing of the introduction of water charges should be re-considered as a clear sign that he is in touch with and listening to the concerns of consumers as they face into a difficult winter with the soaring cost of living. Consumers here will greet this news with a sigh of relief.
- Consumer Council Challenges Scale Of Nie Energy Increases As Consumers Reel From Double Energy Price Rise In One Day
10 September 2008The Consumer Council believes that today’s unprecedented increases in electricity and gas prices – the second this year – will strike fear and distress into many consumers already anxious about their ability to make ends meet in the face of spiralling costs this winter. They called for the scale of the NIE Energy price increase to be re-examined in order to ensure that consumers receive a full and satisfactory explanation and justification as to why NIE Energy’s level of increase is almost double that in the rest of the UK[i]. The Consumer Council is looking to the Northern Ireland (NI) Executive to establish an emergency winter fund to help struggling households cope with the rising cost of keeping warm and well this winter.

The Consumer Council website www.consumercouncil.org.uk now allows consumers to leave a comment, share money saving tips with others and take part in a cost of living survey.

They want to find out how consumers are coping and what they believe should be done to help them as they face into this winter which seems set to bring even more misery and crisis to many households here already struggling to make ends meet.
