Consumer Council Welcomes Gas Safe Awareness Campaign
Wednesday 17 February 2010
The Consumer Council has welcomed the launch of the Gas Safe Register public awareness campaign. Gas Safe Register will replace the CORGI registration scheme on 1 April 2010. It has also called for registered engineers to reflect the reduced costs of the new scheme in their charges to customers.
Speaking at the launch, Consumer Council Chief Executive, Antoinette McKeown, said: “Consumer Council research[a] shows that safety and the expertise of engineers are top priorities for gas consumers here. The public awareness campaign to inform consumers about the new Gas Safe Register is therefore to be welcomed. The Consumer Council is delighted to work with the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) to help promote it.
“The Consumer Council welcomes Gas Safe Register’s promise of a responsive and efficient gas safety scheme with minimised costs[b] and increased spot checks. We urge all customers to get their gas appliances serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It is our priority to work with the industry and HSENI to deliver a competitive, affordable and above all, safe gas industry for Northern Ireland.”
To ensure engineers are registered, customers can check their ID card, and ring the helpline on 0800 408 5500 or check the website www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk.
