Bus And Rail Passengers Are Next To Pay For Soaring Fuel Costs
Wednesday 6 August 2008
Northern Ireland bus and rail passengers are next in line to be hit by the soaring cost of fuel with Translink’s announcement today that fares will rise by an average of five per cent on 25 August. Today’s announcement comes only six months after a similar announcement in March.
Aodhan O’Donnell, Head of Transport at the Consumer Council said: “Consumers continue to feel the impact of the spiralling cost of fuel. This fare increase is a direct result of increasing fuel prices and through our consultation with Translink, we are assured that they have made every effort to keep the increase to a minimum. However, that is cold comfort for people who are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet.
“During this consumer crunch, we are all having to learn to make our money go as far as we can. We would encourage passengers to take advantage of promotional fares and multi-journey tickets so that they are not paying a penny more for their travel than they have to.
“We welcome the open and transparent way in which Translink engaged with the Consumer Council on this fare increase. The Consumer Council will continue to work together with Translink to promote public transport as a value for money travel option.”
