SSE Airtricity gas and electricity customers benefit

in Energy

The Consumer Council welcomes today’s announcement by SSE Airtricity of a 7.8 per cent price reduction for its 127,000 gas customers in the Greater Belfast area and an 8 per cent price reduction for its 170,000 electricity customers across Northern Ireland.

Speaking about the gas price decrease, Richard Williams, head of energy at the Consumer Council said: “SSE Airtricity is the first gas company in Northern Ireland to pass on a price reduction to its customers. This is great news for SSE Airtricity customers who will pocket £53 off their annual gas bill.

“SSE Airtricity and firmus energy are the only two gas companies who supply domestic gas in the Greater Belfast area.  The Consumer Council would like to see firmus energy step up and compete with SSE Airitricty’s latest price reduction as we want to see a competitive domestic gas market for customers in the Greater Belfast area.

Turning to the electricity reduction, Richard said “This reduction represents a typical saving of £55 off a SSE Airtricity domestic bill in Northern Ireland.  When Power NI followed Budget Energy in dropping its electricity price, we challenged other suppliers to step up to the mark, reduce prices and open the way for a more competitive local energy market.

“Our recent research published in January showed that consumers were not feeling the green shoots of recovery even though wholesale gas and crude oil prices had fallen.  They also said the cost of energy was still their number one concern.  Gas consumers in Greater Belfast and electricity consumers across Northern Ireland will now start to feel the benefit of these price reductions in their pockets”.
