‘Spot and Stop Scams’ Conference
Mark H. Durkan hosts conference on scams with partners Consumer Council
Come along to the ‘Spot and Stop Scams’ conference, hosted by Mark H. Durkan and the Consumer Council, aimed at raising consumers’ and businesses’ awareness of scams.
Speakers in attendance will include the local Crime Prevention team, Derry City and Strabane District, Police Service of Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland Trading Standards Service and Information Commissioner’s Office.
This free event will take place on:
Friday 25 November – 10.30am at the City Hotel, Derry/Londonderry
Commenting on the event Mark H. Durkan MLA explains “The number people here who have fallen foul to scammers in the past few years is astonishingly high. It is vitally important that we do all we can to protect ourselves and our more vulnerable people from these often sophisticated scams. I have organised this event in the hope of raising public awareness of this increasingly prevalent issue.”
John French, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council said “Our research shows that nearly 1 in 5 Northern Ireland consumers have been the victim of a scam in the last 3 years. However, this is a crime that carries stigma and often goes unreported so the true figure is likely to be higher.
“Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and varied but the aim remains the same - to take money from unsuspecting members of the public. This conference is timely given that it will be taking place on Black Friday. With so many ‘great’ sales taking place, it’s all too easy for people to become more susceptible to fake offers and fraud – so the conference will provide some helpful hints and tips to avoiding the pitfalls.”
