Girlguiding members to earn their ‘Guided Consumer’ badge
On World Consumer Rights Day (Tuesday 15 March) the Consumer Council is launching a new partnership with Girlguiding Ulster to help raise awareness of consumer rights amongst young people.
The organisations are working together to develop and deliver a new ‘Guided Consumer’ badge, which will be rolled out to approximately 2,700 Girlguiding members aged 10 to 14.
Speaking about the initiative Ronan Convery, Senior Policy Officer at the Consumer Council said: “Young people are the consumers of tomorrow so it is important we educate them now on their consumer rights and responsibilities.
“This initiative is designed to help them learn and understand their consumer rights through interactive, fun activities so they become informed and confident consumers. Topics covered include budgeting and shopping safely online. In turn we hope participants share their new found knowledge with friends and family.”
Girlguiding Ulster Chief Commissioner Carole Graham added: “This innovative and fun badge is just one example of the way Girlguiding adapts to the changing needs of girls and young women in Northern Ireland and across the UK. We hope that this fun and innovative badge will empower girls and young women to take control of their finances, and know their rights as a consumer.”
The initiative will be rolled out from September 2016 to all 160 Girlguiding Ulster groups across Northern Ireland.
