Girl Power Spices Up Young Consumers Competition

in Consumer Skills

Three all girl teams will battle for the title of Northern Ireland’s Young Consumer Champions on Friday 5 March at the Ulster Museum Belfast.

The competition which aims to raise young people’s awareness of consumer rights and responsibilities is organised by the General Consumer Council and Trading Standards Service. · The teams competing are Glenlola Collegiate Bangor, Convent Grammar School Strabane and Newry High School who beat 26 other schools and colleges of further education to get to the final. · Teams will be quizzed on consumer law, health, safety and environmental and topical consumer issues such as the Euro and genetically modified food. · The winners will receive £500 for their school, a silver trophy and individual prizes. David Livingstone, Chief Trading Standards Officer commented, “Schools taking part in this quiz are giving their pupils a head start in life. Although only one team can win, each student has learned how to avoid the ‘dodgy deals’ and be a smart consumer.” Joan Whiteside, Chairman of the General Consumer Council said “Recent research shows that younger consumers in Northern Ireland lack awareness of their consumer rights. Co-operation between the Council and Trading Standards in organising this quiz is helping to create better consumers.
