European Mobility Week – 16 – 24 September 2016

The Consumer Council is encouraging all consumers to think about using sustainable travel options during European Mobility Week 2016.

Scott Kennerley, Head of Transport Policy at the Consumer Council said “This week provides an opportunity for consumers to leave the car at home and consider travelling by public transport, car sharing, cycling or walking.”

Scott continued “There are many great initiatives available to consumers across NI from integrated public transport, improved cycle lanes and car sharing schemes, which consumers can try out.”

Anne Madden from Sustrans said: “A study of 150,000 adults in the UK, published in the Lancet this year, found those who walk, cycle or take the bus or train to work are slimmer. Less congestion also means less air pollution. The message is clear - getting out of your car is good for your health. Sustrans works with schools and employers to encourage active travel. If you want to find out more contact our office on 028 90434569 or”

Lynda Shannon, Translink Communications Manager said, “This is a great initiative to encourage more people to try public transport.   Many of our customers regularly tell us they prefer using the bus and train as it gives them more time to relax, free from the stress of driving in traffic, more time to catch up on work or social activities making use of free wifi on board trains and coaches, reduced journey times, as well as money savings compared to paying for fuel, parking and car maintenance costs – these are just some of the more popular ones – there are many more!”
