Assisted air travel for those with a disability or reduced mobility
The Consumer Council and Autism NI have joined forces to produce a factsheet on the free assistance available when travelling by air with a disability or reduced mobility.
Jenny Robinson, Senior Policy Officer at the Consumer Council said “Travelling with a disability or reduced mobility can be daunting but there are services in place to make the journey as hassle free as possible. Passengers who have used these services have told us how helpful they are.
“All types of disabilities are covered including hidden ones such as learning difficulties, autism and hearing loss. Assistance is available at all stages of the journey, right from the point of booking your ticket and must be provided free of charge.”
Dr Arlene Cassidy, Autism NI’s CEO said: “The factsheet is a great source of information for a family who has a child with Autism. Air travel doesn’t need to be stressful for our Autism families who often need a holiday more than most! Therefore this simple factsheet is a great source of information for our parents. It outlines all of the obstacles that could arise and how to cope or seek help if they do. Most importantly it provides useful information on what support services are provided at airports and how these can be very easily accessed to make an Autism family’s travelling experience as easy and comfortable as possible.”
The factsheet outlines what passengers are entitled to and what to do if they are unhappy with the service received when travelling by air. It is available to download from the Consumer Council website www.consumercouncil.org.uk
