Be Prepared For The Winter Freeze

Saturday 6 December 2008

This week saw temperatures plunge below freezing. Between frozen pipes and power cuts, the cold weather can wreak havoc for households. Are you ready if the heat and lights go out? Do you know where to go for help? Here are the Consumer Council’s top tips to get you ready for winter.

Water in Winter

Water pipes in your property are your responsibility.  As the weather gets colder, protect your pipes to prevent them from bursting by:

· Insulating water tanks and pipes in lofts, roof spaces, garages and outbuildings where there is no heating. (Source: NI Water)

·  Fixing dripping taps. A trickle of water can freeze and block your pipe. (Source NI Water)

· Check your building and contents insurance to make sure you are covered for damage caused by a burst pipe in your home;

·  NI Water’s “Priority Services” scheme offers a range of extra services for some people.  For example, if you have a serious medical condition which means your health could be at risk if your water supply is cut, Northern Ireland Water can make special arrangements so that you have an alternative water supply. Contact Waterline on 08457 440088 for more information.

·  You should also phone Waterline if your water supply is turned off.

Get Your Boiler Checked

The last thing you need is your boiler breaking down in the cold weather so get it serviced once a year.

  • For gas boilers you must use a Corgi registered installer. Always confirm that the installer you use is Corgi registered before they carry out any work and ask to see their ID card.
  • If you suspect a gas leak in your home call the 24 hour Gas emergency number on 0800 002 001
  • For oil boilers it is recommended that you use a technician from the Oil Fired Technician Association (OFTEC).  Visit www.oftec.org for more information and to find your nearest OFTEC technician.

Electricity

Stormy weather can sometimes result in the electricity going off. Remember to:

  • Fit new batteries in torches and radios;
  • If you depend on electrical equipment that is vital to your health contact Northern Ireland Electricity to get on their critical care register on 08457 455 455; and
  • If your electricity goes off phone Northern Ireland Electricity on 08457 643 643.
