Take Hold Of The Reins This Christmas
Saturday 29 November 2008
Christmas is a wonderful time of the year, but it can be costly. Here are the Consumer Council’s tips to help you get the most for your money.
1. Rein in your spendingMake a list, set a budget and stick to it. Use the Consumer Council’s Christmas budget planner to help.
2. Be a smart shopperKnow your shoppers’ rights and responsibilities. Always keep the Consumer Council Shoppers’ Rights Card handy.
3. Variety is the spice of Christmas lifeShop around to compare prices in different stores and online.
4. Be a savvy shopper at the checkouts
Some shops change their returns policy at Christmas so ask before you buy. Keep receipts safe in the Consumer Council’s receipt wallet.
5. Share the cost of ChristmasTake advantage of 3 for 2 gift offers and split the gifts and cost with friends and family.
6. Small is beautiful
Postage on Christmas cards now depends on size and it’s cheaper to post smaller cards. Write your cards early and post them 2nd class instead of 1st.
7. Ssh! It’s a secret!
Organise a Secret Santa with family or friends. Put everyone’s name in a hat, agree a set limit to spend and only buy a present for the name you pick out.
8. Paint the town red - not your bank accountTravel in groups to cut taxi costs or take turns being designated driver. Pre-book taxis and check the fare up-front. Prices can vary over the festive period. Check the Consumer Council’s Guide to Taking Taxis for more information.
9. Stock up in the New Year sales
If you’ve any money left over, pick up reduced gifts, cards and wrapping paper in the sales.
10. Don’t forget your vouchers
Keep your vouchers safe and make sure to use them before they go out of date.
