Installing Natural Gas

The natural gas network is currently being extended into the West of Northern Ireland including Strabane, Dungannon, Cookstown, Coalisland, Magherafelt, Omagh, Enniskillen and Derrylin. Scotia Natural Gas (SGN) owns, operates and is responsible for developing this natural gas network.
Connecting your home to the gas network is free with firmus, PNG, and SGN so long as it is a straightforward connection (conditions apply). However, you will have to pay for a new gas boiler and any internal plumbing and radiators that may be needed. Information on how you may be able to get help to reduce these costs is available in our Energy Efficiency Schemes section.
Domestic Gas Market
The domestic natural gas market in Greater Belfast and Larne is open to competition. There are two natural gas suppliers in these areas, SSE Airtricity Gas Supply Limited (NI) and firmus energy. This means domestic customers can shop around for their natural gas. By switching to a new gas supplier, you may save money and receive a better service.

Firmus energy also supplies natural gas in Antrim, Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Newry, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady and Derry. Domestic customers in these areas currently have no choice of gas supplier.
SSE Airtricity supplies natural gas to the West of Northern Ireland including Strabane, Dungannon, Cookstown, Coalisland, Magherafelt, Omagh, Enniskillen and Derrylin. Domestic customers in these areas currently have no choice of gas supplier.
Business Gas Market
If your business is based in the Greater Belfast or Larne area you have a choice of natural gas suppliers. SSE Airtricity Gas Supply, Electric Ireland, VAYU, firmus energy, Go Power Energy, and Flogas (Natural Gas) supply gas to non domestic premises in these areas. Firmus energy and Flogas (Natural Gas) also supply natural gas to businesses in the Ten Towns licence areas. This includes Antrim, Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon, Newry, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady and Derry. Industrial and commercial customers in these areas can currently switch gas supplier. They can choose between firmus energy, SSE Airtricity Gas Supply, Go Power Energy and Flogas (Natural Gas).

Marketing Code of Practice
All gas suppliers must adhere to the Utility Regulator's Marketing Code of Practice. This protects gas customers, in particular vulnerable customers, from inappropriate marketing practices and guards against the mis-selling of products. Guaranteed Standards of Service
Gas network operator, Phoenix Natural Gas and gas suppliers have guaranteed standards of service. These standards let customers know how companies should perform in the event of a complaint or network problems, and include payments to customers should they fail to meet them. There are some exceptions to the guaranteed standards and the company may not have to make a compensation payment in all instances.
