These activities use the context of a proposed out of town shopping centre to examine how consumer activities impact on the environment and in addition how consumers through their actions can exercise influence. It allows pupils to consider how consumers' needs are to be represented in a democracy and the rights and responsibilities of consumers in this context.(Key Stage 3/4).

This series of activities are designed to introduce pupils to thinking about their local community and use contexts such as litter, vandalism and graffiti to explore how individual, family and community behaviour can impact on quality of life.

Looking at the types and levels of packaging, it will allow them to consider how consumers can make a difference to the amount of rubbish currently going into landfill sites. It could be linked to living independently, and our individual responsibility in disposing of waste.

These activities use the context of product packaging to explore how we are influenced as consumers by presentation. (See activity The Power of advertising also). It introduces pupils to consumer rights in terms of labelling legislation in place to protect consumers but also to the wider impact of our decision to choose certain products over others. These activities are designed to get students thinking about the issues around energy needs, use and conservation. It will allow them to consider how consumers can make a difference to energy consumption. It also explores alternative sources of energy in the home. This could be linked to living independently, and how they might manage their own fuel costs.

These activities were designed to introduce pupils to the topic of Water efficiency at home. This is an area of growing importance for all consumers in today's society. The importance of water in general and in our everyday activities was investigated. It raised pupils' awareness of the need to conserve water and the ways they could easily do this at home.


This activity extends the initial lesson 'How do businesses behave', providing students with the opportunity to explore environmental issues based around sustainable development. These days' consumers and governments are demanding that businesses operate in a more responsible and environmentally friendly way.
Disposing of waste responsibly, energy/resource conservation; using recycled materials in the manufacturing of products and anti pollution measures are all important issues for businesses, given the current trends in corporate responsibility and environmental awareness.
