These activities are designed to enable pupils to distinguish between wants and necessities and understand the interdependence of wants. At a basic level, pupils, when presented with pictures will be able to differentiate between various lifestyles as well as highlighting the apparent similarities. The lesson will introduce pupils to the notion of allocating a fixed amount of purchasing power to their wants. Finally, students are required to classify a range of sources into necessities and luxuries. (Years 8 and 9)

From activities in this lesson pupils will understand the pressures exerted on them by their peer group. Exercises require pupils to interpret data and then gain an understanding of the benefits of financial planning. The lesson also teaches pupils the importance of budgeting and allows them to construct a personal budget. (Year 10)
