Young People Get Help To Manage Their Money
Wednesday 2 April 2008
The Consumer Council says that young people in Northern Ireland are set to become more financially savvy thanks to the launch of “Money Talks” - a new pack from the Northern Bank and Citizens Advice.
Julie Megrath, Head of Money Affairs at the Consumer Council said, “With children and young people here receiving more than £8 a week in pocket money on average[1], it is more important than ever that they get the saving and budgeting habit early to make the most of their money and stay out of debt. A survey [2] published this week shows that debt is currently one of the biggest fears for young people. Therefore it is vital that they learn to manage their money wisely now so they will have the skills and confidence to make sound financial decisions as they grow up. “Money Talks” is crammed full of important information on saving, budgeting and much more and will give young people the skills to manage their money and be more confident consumers.”
“Money Talks” makes a significant contribution to increasing financial know-how among consumers here. This is a key aim of partners across the community, education, private and public sectors which are all represented on the Financial Capability Partnership which is led by the Consumer Council and Financial Services Authority. The Partnership is working to create more financially capable consumers across Northern Ireland.
