Consumer Council Concludes Work To Address Irregular Payments Issue

Tuesday 20 December 2011

Following its announcement in March this year that irregular payments were found to have been paid to some staff, the Consumer Council says work to address the issue has concluded.

Consumer Council Chief Executive, Antoinette McKeown said:  “When we first alerted NI consumers to this issue earlier in the year we made a commitment to address it and to inform consumers as soon as there was an outcome.  Since March we have been working closely with our sponsoring Department, the Department for Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) to agree the most appropriate corrective action to address the matter.  Taking a range of issues into account, the decision has been reached to “write off” the outstanding amount of irregular payments and relevant staff salaries will be frozen until they reach the correct salary point.

“The Consumer Council would like to acknowledge once again to consumers that this situation should not have happened and provide the fullest assurances that it will not happen again.   The Consumer Council remains totally focused on managing public money effectively across all areas of our remit on behalf of consumers.”
