Consumer Council Statement Re: Northern Ireland Authority For Utility Regulation’s Decision To Conduct An Inquiry Into Businesses’ Concerns About Electricity Bills

Wednesday 11 November 2009

The Consumer Council has welcomed the Utility Regulator’s inquiry in response to business customers’ concerns about recent, unexpected rises in their electricity bills.

John French, head of energy at the Consumer Council said: “Northern Ireland’s business customers have the right to be concerned about the lack of transparency in the electricity industry about price rises. The Consumer Council shares these concerns as it is more important than ever that businesses can plan ahead and the cost of electricity is an important element of this.

“We have already been speaking to energy suppliers about this issue and have written to the Regulator expressing our concerns. We look forward to working with the Regulator to ensure that businesses do not find themselves in this situation again.”
