Consumer Council Statement On Northern Bank's New Account For Young People

Monday 12 November 2007

Julie Megrath, Financial Capability Co-ordinator said:

“Whether it's choosing a new mobile phone or taking out a student loan, young people find themselves facing tough choices when it comes to managing their money.

"Many young people get pocket money or earn money from chores or part time jobs. It is important that they have the skills to manage their money every day and be encouraged to save for the future. The Consumer Council welcomes this new account for young people - it should help them manage their money and start saving for the future. Young people have told us they are keen to have bank and savings accounts and the Northern Bank has listened to their younger customers and created an account just for them. Northern Ireland consumers lag way behind the rest of the UK when it comes to being financially savvy so it is more important than ever for young people to make the most of their money and start the savings habit."
