Helping Businesses Get It Right For Consumers

Tuesday 6 November 2007

The Consumer Council and Skillsmart Retail brought together representative's from Northern Ireland's biggest retailers for a Consumer Law and Customer Care Seminar.

Venue: Park Avenue Hotel, Belfast

Invite Only: Yes

Representatives from Henderson Retail; IKEA; Tesco; NI Co-Op; Musgrave Retail Partners NI; Menarys; Marks & Spencer; Ulster Stores; Homebase; TK Maxx; Dekko and Harry Corry attended the seminar aimed at:

· Raising businesses awareness of consumer protection legislation;

· Encouraging businesses to use the Consumer Council and colleagues at Trading Standards Service and Consumerline as a source of advice and support

· Identifying best practice in complaint handling; and

· Creating a culture of excellent customer care, particularly for consumers that may need extra help such as older consumers and people with disabilities.

The afternoon session was used to consult on tools and support needed for HR Managers to roll this training and information out to employees.

Evaluation responses:

“It’s good to know that the Consumer Council and Consumerline is supportive of business and does not always automatically take the customers side”

“Pleased to know about the support that the Consumer Council gives both consumers and retailers”

“Very informative and not too much jargon”

“Thank you for an inspiring day”

“Wasn’t aware it is against the law to have signage which says ‘No Refunds’ or ‘Sold As Seen’ “
