Consumer Protection (Northern Ireland) Order 1987

This Order deals with both civil and criminal law.

Under Part II, liability under - referred to as Product Liability - is imposed on the manufacturer or importer of a defective product which causes loss or damage.

A defective product is one that does not reach the standard of safety you are generally entitled to expect. You can claim compensation from the manufacturer or importer if the defective product causes death or personal injury.  You can also claim for loss or damage to personal property exceeding £275.  You do not have to prove that the manufacturer or importer was negligent or at fault. You can not claim for any damage done to the defective product itself.

Part III makes it a criminal offence for a trader to give consumers a misleading indication about the price of any goods, services, accommodation or facilities, e.g. a shelf edge label or price list shows the price of the goods as £1.50 but the customer is charged £1.80 at the till, or an advertisement does not mention that the customer has to pay delivery charges.

Part II is Civil Law
Part III is enforced by Northern Ireland Trading Standards Service
