Energy Issues

This section includes information on how to improve your energy efficiency and save money on your bills.

Part of The Consumer Council’s role is to represent the interest of businesses and not for profit organisations on energy matters. We do this by investigating their electricity and gas complaints, providing information to help businesses cut costs, helping improve knowledge of their rights and lobbying on energy issues on their behalf.

Electricity Survey

The Consumer Council has launched an online survey for small business and not for profit organisations to help us understand their thoughts on the electricity market. Those who complete the survey and provide an email address will enter a draw for a chance to win a £50 prize.

Gas Network

The natural gas network is currently being extended into the West of Northern Ireland including Strabane, Dungannon, Cookstown, Coalisland, Magherafelt, Omagh, Enniskillen and Derrylin. Scotia Natural Gas (SNG) owns, operates and is responsible for developing this natural gas network. Once gas is available, business customers in these towns have a choice from the following suppliers: SSE Airtricity, Electric Ireland, firmus energy, Flogas (Natural Gas) and Go Power.

Switching Suppliers for Businesses

In most cases electricity and gas suppliers do not advertise a range of tariffs for businesses to choose from. Electricity and gas providers will ask you to contact them and discuss and arrange a tariff that suits your business. For more information see our Switch on Electricity and Gas Guide.

Energy Complaints

You can contact The Consumer Council for information and advice about energy issues. We may also be able to investigate your electricity or natural gas complaint on your behalf.

Follow these simple steps.

  1. If you have an energy complaint contact your electricity or gas supplier first. They should acknowledge or respond within ten working days.
  2. If you don’t receive a response from your supplier or the issue is not resolved satisfactorily, you should contact The Consumer Council. We have a complaints team that will investigate your complaint free of charge and keep you informed of developments. Simply contact us on 0800 121 6022 or email contact@consumercouncil.org.uk and we can investigate your complaint on your behalf.
